If you only dislike sin because of the consequences it brings, then you’re not truly sorry for the offense it is to God—you’re simply upset that His justice requires punishment. Real repentance is a matter of the heart, where you grieve over your sin because it dishonors God and damages your relationship with Him, not because you fear the repercussions.

When you truly repent, you recognize the ugliness of sin and turn from it out of love for God, not just to avoid His wrath. Repentance isn’t about escaping punishment; it’s about aligning your heart with God’s holiness. If you only regret that God is just, you miss the deeper issue—that sin is an offense to a loving and righteous God. True repentance transforms your view of sin and leads you into a deeper, more authentic walk with Him.
